Chapter 16: DESIGNING FOR DIFFERENT NEEDS

In this chapter I learned that there are two concepts which is modalities and working sets. Command modalities are techniques which allows users to issue instructions to the application like drop-down, pop-up menus, keyboard accelerators etc. The main commands are pedagogic which beginners use this approach and teaches their behavior using inspection. Intermediates typically leaves menus behind. These commands are supposed to be easily learned and memorized since they are invisible commands, while intermediate is in between.

New users want to become intermediates if they start out with pedagogic commands. I learned that working sets are memorized features that consist of commands and features.it is productive to create personas for people with disabilities and their guidelines to provide a reasonable starting point for approaching accessible application design and some include not overriding user-selected system settings, use simple clear language and use repones times that all can use. Upon that layouts and task flows should be consistent, there should be text equivalents or visual elements, clear brief language and no blink or flash visual elements. To end this chapter, it talks about design techniques that can be done to the interface of a website like personalization, customizability, overview descriptions etc., configuring applications with moving around controls on toolbars.
